In honour of #IWD: Ladies, it starts with us!

If you’ve been tweeting about International Women’s Day because you’ve been trying to tell men or more specifically your EX that he should have loved you more, you’re doing it wrong.

Thankfully most of the posts I’ve seen all week are by beautiful ladies showing some love to the influential women in their lives! This week is all about empowering women. And, correct me if I’m wrong but I believe it starts with women. If we’re more concerned about men being the limiting factor of our happiness and success, we gotta step back for a second. This may be an unpopular opinion but it’s been on my mind and who knows, maybe it’ll resonate with you.

Don’t get me wrong though. I get that women all over the world aren’t getting the fundamental rights they deserve (surprisingly in Canada as well), and people will say that it’s the fault of men. Which isn’t wrong in some cases. Many cultural, religious, or political beliefs have falsely led this idea that men should be dominating in multiple areas of life. I’ve personally experienced this ideology countless times.

But, I think we need to focus on what we can do as women before we point any fingers.

From what I’ve seen with men, they support each other. A lot. Whether it’s with politics, businesses, bromances, or with the wingman concept. They don’t overcomplicate love for each other (it’s a whole other story when it comes to them loving women…y’all already know… that’s not to say we’re any less complicated though.)

But here’s to my fellow female friends. Let’s support each other.  I feel like we spend way more time and energy being envious of each other’s success and happiness rather than being empowering. Let’s think about ways in which we can make the woman beside us feel beautiful and respected by another fellow woman.

Empowering women to reach their full potential starts with us! Enough of the fear that the next woman will be better than you – there will be women who are more competent in different things but that’s not to discourage you. Not to sound cliché but just know there is nobody in the entire world that can bring to the table your unique presence, beauty, and power better than you can. Who knows? Maybe everything you are is an inspiration to other people.

Also before you expect to be valued by any men, y’all better be valuing yourself and your fellow female friends first.

In other words, unless we come together in love and unity, we can’t be screaming “Girls!” when Beyoncé asks “Who run the world?” For real, why is the brotherhood so much louder than the sisterhood, where my female babes at!?

Much love beauties and Happy International Women’s Day, y’all are amazing!

PS. International Women’s Day isn’t in competition with International Men’s Day, can’t stress that enough! I believe that each day is just an opportunity to appreciate the people of the respective gender in our lives who have been influential and lovely.
